Nespresso - A Convenient Eco-Friendly Coffee Machine

The presence of a Nespresso machine on your kitchen counter once signified membership of the global consumer coffee elite.14.coffee machine nespresso It was a badge of status, an indication that you preferred the convenience and uniformity of pre-packaged pods over the messy brews of pour-overs and Aeropresses. But now the brand has found itself in the crosshairs of eco-conscious consumers, and a Nespresso on your counter can look rather like a guilty secret.

The Nespresso machines use high pressure to brew espresso-based drinks, such as latte and cappuccino (which can be enhanced with a manual milk frother) and hot cocoa and tea.14.coffee machine nespresso They are more expensive than traditional drip-coffee machines but are much smaller, take up less space and don’t require a grinder. The brand’s capsules are embossed with a barcode that enables the machines to read their contents and deliver bespoke extraction instructions. They also contain a small amount of aluminum, which has to be mined and refined before it can be recycled.

As a result, unless they are recycled, the pods produce about five times as much waste as ground coffee does.14.coffee machine nespresso This has raised concerns about the environmental impact of the machines, and some consumers have opted to purchase cheaper, non-Nespresso-approved systems that use traditional grinds. Others have switched to reusable capsules from third-party brands, which are available from online retailers and some coffee shops.

Until recently, Nespresso was the only maker of home machines that used its own brand of capsules but the company’s expansion into Vertuo lines has introduced competitors.14.coffee machine nespresso Nespresso’s capsules are still made from aluminium but they can be reused, and the company has set up recycling schemes in 36 countries. It has also reduced the aluminium content of its capsules, and has started selling more environmentally friendly plastic ones in some markets.

Nespresso offers a wide range of different machines, which vary in complexity and price.14.coffee machine nespresso The cheapest, the Inissia and U models are very compact and cost around £150, while the most advanced is the £2,800 Lattissima, which can make seven different recipes. Each model is compatible with a specific series of capsules, which are available from the manufacturer’s website and at many other stores including Williams Sonoma and illy.

Some machines, such as the Inissia and U, are compatible with both Original and Vertuo capsules, while others – such as the Lattissima and Pro models – only accept Nespresso-brand capsules. The cheapest machines only brew espresso-based drinks, while the more advanced ones can make a wider variety of recipes, including cappuccino and latte.

The Lattissima and Pro can even dispense milk, with the machine determining the right ratio of coffee to milk based on your chosen recipe. A touch of a button can also create a thick layer of coffee foam for latte and cappuccino, while the intuitive touchscreen makes it simple to program your favourite drinks. The machine is connected to the internet, which allows it to be programmed remotely and provides alerts if there are problems. It can also be controlled via the smartphone app, which lets you order more capsules or descale your machine.
